For the time that I was in the stores things were calm but steady - there's
always work to be done here, the two main deliveries a day need to be processed
and the department's 'robot' needs to be regularly fed with new stock.
The robot is a fairly recent arrival and has streamlined the processing and provision of prescriptions. It consists of two aisles of floor to ceiling shelves, each aisle having a motorised platform that can place stock on the shelf or respond to requests made via any computer linked up to the pharmacy network to pick items and send them to be dispensed via a Heath Robinson-like arrangement of conveyor belts, slides and paddles.
